Caution: Deer don't read signs!
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is warning motorists to be on the lookout for deer this month.
June consistently ranks among the worst months of the year for deer-car crashes, according to Dennis Hughes, chief of safety programs for the State Patrol Bureau of Transportation Safety.
These collisions are more likely to occur between 8 p.m. and midnight, so drivers should be especially vigilant at night, Hughes said. This applies especially to motorcyclists, who were involved in 10 of 2007's 14 fatal deer- vehicle crashes.
In all, law enforcement agencies reported 17,977 deer-vehicle crashes in 2007.
More information is available from the DOT's Web site, at www.dot.state.wi.us.
Reacting to Deer When Driving
This is the time of year that we must be extra alert for deer while driving. Use extra caution at dawn and dusk, as these are times when deer travel most frequently.
- If you see one deer, it’s likely there are others close by so do slow down
- Flash headlights to scare deer away, but slow down in case they continue to run out in front of you!
- Don’t swerve across the center line or brake hard; it is actually better to hit the deer than cause an additional traffic-related accident as a result of avoiding the deer.
- Always scan the sides of country and rural roads
- Most deer accidents occur between 5-10 p.m.
- Watch for deer signs, as they are clear warnings of deer in the area
- Always keep your car in good repair so that headlights, tires, and brakes are in good condition
